When modular engineering with skids assembled in Brazil pays

Modularising almost always makes sense. The decision that changes cost, schedule and local content is another one, namely where the package integration happens and who answers for it.

The question is not whether to modularise, it is where to integrate

Process packages reach a plant in one of two ways. Either the equipment arrives assembled from origin, with integration done at the manufacturer plant, or it arrives as assemblies and components and the integration happens in Brazil, in a qualified shop, on a structural skid. Modular engineering with skids assembled in the country is not a poor version of the first alternative, it is an architecture decision that changes cost, schedule, risk and, decisively in exploration and production contracts, the measured local content percentage.

The right question at definition stage is therefore not whether the package will be modular, since it almost always will, but where the integration happens and who answers for it.

What goes into the local assembly account

Logistics and taxation

Assembled equipment takes volume, requires special packing and sea fastening and often abnormal load transport to the installation site. Knocked down assemblies take less space, travel better and allow arrival to be staged against the erection schedule, which reduces the financial cost of stock in transit.

Local content

Skid structure, interconnecting piping, supports, cabling, panels, painting, testing and commissioning performed in Brazil all count as measurable value. Because of that, the same process package can carry very different local content percentages depending on the assembly boundary chosen, a subject covered in detail in local content compliance in Brazil.

Schedule

Local assembly allows parallel work, since while the process components are manufactured at origin, structure, piping and panels progress in Brazil. In exchange, it demands far stricter interface coordination, because any dimensional divergence only shows up at integration.

Assistance and service life

A skid integrated in the country is born with local documentation, local spares and a local assembly team, which shortens response time across the whole life of the package and feeds directly into cycle cost, a subject covered in total cost of ownership of a valve in severe service.

When local assembly does not pay

It would be dishonest to present the alternative as universal. Integration at origin remains the right choice when the package depends on a proprietary manufacturing process inseparable from assembly, when performance testing requires a rig that exists only at the manufacturer plant, when the volume is too small to justify mobilising a local shop, and when the schedule is so short that there is no time to qualify the Brazilian chain. In those cases, insisting on local assembly trades an uncertain saving for a certain schedule risk.

What has to be settled before deciding

Three definitions precede the choice and are usually left for later, at a cost. The first is the supply boundary, that is, exactly where the manufacturer scope ends and the local integration scope begins, item by item and not by generic description. The second is responsibility for the performance of the assembly, since a package integrated by a third party demands a clear warranty rule, with acceptance testing defined and approval criteria agreed before mobilisation. The third is shop qualification, including welding procedures, welder qualification, dimensional control, non-destructive testing and material traceability.

With those three written down, modular engineering stops being a bet and becomes a controlled arrangement. Without them, the projected saving usually dissolves into interface rework and warranty argument.

How we run it

PVF Solutions structures the package from the process problem rather than from a product list, defines the supply boundary with the manufacturer, organises the integration in Brazil and answers for the assembly before the client. The registration and qualification path that precedes that arrangement is described in supplier qualification in Brazil, and the corresponding service lines are described in Solutions.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions on modular engineering and skids

Does assembling the skid in Brazil raise local content?

Yes, because structure, interconnecting piping, supports, panels, painting, testing and commissioning performed in the country become measurable value. The gain depends on the supply boundary chosen, which has to be defined item by item before purchase.

When is integration at origin still better?

When the package depends on a proprietary manufacturing process inseparable from assembly, when performance testing requires a rig that exists only at the manufacturer plant, when volume does not justify mobilising a local shop, or when the schedule does not allow qualifying the Brazilian chain.

Who answers for the warranty of a skid integrated by a third party?

That has to be agreed before mobilisation, with a written supply boundary, defined acceptance testing and approval criteria for the assembly. Without that definition, the warranty argument usually consumes the saving obtained in local assembly.

Want to assess the supply boundary of your package?

We review the scope, compare integration at origin against assembly in Brazil and structure the arrangement with warranty and acceptance testing defined.
